The base of Koksijde is located at the Belgian Coast and has his origin back into the beginning of the first
World War. After both World Wars, Koksijde was used as a fighter school, which
was disbanded in 1958. In 1961, the heliflight was set up which name was changed
into '40th Squadron' in October 1974. The Squadron had the duty to search victims
of aerocrashes and rescue them. From 1961 till 1986 these duties were done by
the sikorsky HSS-1, which was later replaced by the Westland Sea King MK48.
Since 1976, three Alouette III's are in use with the heliflight Marine, which
is also based at Koksijde. Nowadays are five Sea Kings and three Alouette III's
based at Koksijde.
